PEIS Innovation

Parents education insurance scheme

The Parents education insurance scheme [PEIS] innovation is one of IMS school dropout prevention core interventions being implemented under SUCCESS Program. PEIS is a community led affordable and flexible child education insurance innovation for children from low-income backgrounds who cannot afford the mainstream education insurance policies.  In its piloting phase, the PEIS innovation is targeting SUCCESS program pupils in UPE schools identified at risk of dropping out of school due to financial difficult. Upon enrollment on PEIS child education insurance policy, policy beneficiaries receive full financial support [through IMS Child Sponsorship scheme] to meet their school fees costs [also known as development fees in UPE schools] for two 2 academic years, while organizing their parents into PEIS groups and empowering them to gradually [in installments] raise their children’s subsequent education costs through the PEIS program. PEIS funds pooled by parents are channeled to a joint Unit Trust Fund policy with a partner insurance company. At maturity of the PEIS child education policy [after 2yrs], the policy beneficiary continues to receive education financial support from the PEIS insured funds. By reducing the financial-related school dropout risks, the PEIS innovation is supporting economically vulnerable children to stay in school and achieve their dreams, while reducing the school dropout crisis in Uganda.
