Effective school dropout prevention
starts with understanding the root
causes that push or pull children out
of school. It further requires
appreciating and sharing the most
promising models, best practices and
innovations in promoting school
completion rates. IMS therefore
generates information that informs
effective programing, advocacy and
decision making related to school
dropout prevention.
School dropout prevention initiatives
in the school setting have been
affected by inadequate capacity of
teachers and educators to identify
and manage potential dropout cases,
and providing effective and friendly
at-risk children’s support aimed at
increasing their opportunities to
academically excel and complete
school. IMS design and deliver
capacity building training for
practicing and prospective teachers
and young professionals in effective
school dropout prevention
approaches.
Although school dropout is a gradual
process, efforts to prevent it in
Uganda’s UPE schools have been
marginalized by lack of strong systems
to timely identify and support students
at risk of dropping out and those
dropped. IMS strengthens early
identification and timely support for
children put at-risk of dropping out of
school. We also establish peer-led
community systems for tracing and
referral of children who dropout of
school.
The school dropout crisis in Uganda is
associated with multifaced drivers and
diverse consequences at individual,
community and national level
social-economic spheres of life. This
hence requires a collective action from
all stakeholders to comprehensively
address the crisis. IMS strengthen
collaboration and partnership between
key stakeholders towards collective
response school dropout crisis.
